Foods That Pregnant Women Shouldn’t Eat
Filed Under PregnancyThere are many foods that pregnant women need to eat to ensure that both mother and baby remain healthy. In addition, there are many foods that shouldn’t be eaten by pregnant women. These include:
- Processed and deli sandwich meats: They may be carrying Listeria, which is a bacteria that has the potential to be deadly. It can cause a miscarriage or even a stillborn baby. Listeria is typically harmless to people but is life threatening for an unborn baby. If you’re pregnant and must eat deli meats, you must cook them until they’re steaming. This helps kill any possible bacteria. Also, avoid raw meats for the same reasons.
- Specific fish types: Most fish is fine for pregnant women to eat, but some types have very high levels of mercury, which can harm the brain of your unborn baby. If too much mercury is consumed by a pregnant woman, her baby can have developmental problems or even brain damage. Fish to avoid include shark, tuna, swordfish, sea bass, tilefish, and king mackerel.
- Raw eggs: These can be carrying harmful bacteria, especially salmonella. Even if you don’t eat raw eggs alone, you should be aware that they are present in many things you normally eat. These include mayonnaise, certain types of Caesar dressing, and ice cream. Check ingredients on these items before eating them.
- Unpasteurized soft cheeses: Certain imported cheeses can carry potentially life threatening Listeria if they haven’t been pasteurized. Cheeses that you should avoid while pregnant include Brie, Feta, Camembert, Mexican cheeses such as Queso, and Gorgonzola. However, you if they’ve been pasteurized, they should be safe.
- Unpasteurized milk or juices: Keep in mind that any kind of milk or juice that hasn’t been pasteurized may be carrying Listeria or other harmful bacteria.
- Alcohol: Even though this has been a topic for debate through the years as some say that a glass of wine on occasion isn’t harmful to the baby, there’s really no proven safe amount of alcohol that’s approved for a pregnant woman to drink.
In addition, since nausea and vomiting are so common, especially early in the pregnancy, you should pay attention to the foods that seem to make you sick and avoid eating it. If your nausea and vomiting become too uncomfortable, your doctor may prescribe a neuromodulation device called PrimaBella. This attaches to the underside of your wrist and eases the nausea without harming mother or baby.
